Our lives, our deeds are written in books, including the book of life. On this basis we will be judged.

What is the book of life?

Moses knows that YHWH writes names in a book and can erase them:

“But now forgive them their sin; if not, then, please, blot me out of the scroll which you have written.” – Exodus 32:32

Any deviation from God’s will may result in erasure from the book:

“Whoever sins against Me, I will blot him out of My book” – Exodus 32:33

Erasure from the book of life:

“Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and let them not be written with the righteous.” – Psalm 69:28.

Those whose names are found in the book will experience salvation on the last day:

„At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who stands guard over the children of your people. Then there will be a time of trouble, such as has not occurred from the beginning of nations to the present. At that time your people will be saved, all who are written in the book.” Daniel 12:1

The joy of being written down in heaven:

“But do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rather rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” – Luke 10:20.

Paul confirms that the names of zealous evangelizers have already been written in the book of life:

“Yes, I beg you, true companion, to help them, who have struggled with me and Clement and the rest of my fellow workers for the gospel, whose names are in the book/scroll of life” – Philippians 4:3.

Judgment is based on the deeds recorded in the books and in the book of life:

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the scrolls/books were opened; and another scroll/book was opened, which is (the scroll) of life; and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the scrolls, according to their deeds.” – Revelation 20:12.

Those not written down in the book of life are destroyed:

“And if anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:15.

The believer who overcomes trials will not be erased from the book of life:

“He who overcomes will likewise be clothed in white garments; and I will by no means blot out his name from the book/scroll of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.” – Revelation 3:5

People not written in Christ’s book of life worship the beast:

“And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” – Revelation 13:8.

Another translation of this verse:

“And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose name has not been written in the scroll of life of the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world.” – Revelation 13:8.

The record in the book of life of Christ has existed since the foundation of the world:

„The beast/animal which you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the Abyss to go into destruction. And the inhabitants of the earth, whose names have not been written in the scroll of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that as it were, and is not, although it is.” – Revelation 17:8.

The people written in the book of life of Christ will enter the New Jerusalem:

“Nothing defiled will enter there, nor anyone who does what is abominable or false, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” – Revelation 21:27.

Does the book of life close after a person’s death?

There is a view that after a person dies, the book of life is closed. Then our prayers can do nothing to help the deceased. The error in this way of thinking is that there are no individual books of life. From the Bible verses, it follows that we have books and a book of life for all of humanity, based on which we are judged. Therefore, the book of life does not close after a person dies.

1 – The record lasts until the final judgment

In Revelation 20:12–15 we see that “the books were opened” only at the Last Judgment, and then names are checked in the Book of Life:

“And I saw the dead… and books were opened, and another book was opened, the book of life… And if anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

2 – Judgment takes place after the resurrection, not immediately after the death of each person.

Hebrews 9:27 states, “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” This suggests that the “reading” of names from the Book of Life will occur at the Final Judgment, not immediately after an individual’s death.

What happens after a person dies?

1 – A person dies. The human body disintegrates, the spirit and soul go to places defined by the Bible as: hades or heaven. Let us recall that the human form consists of spirit, soul and body:

2 – People who have proven their faith during their lives go to heaven (Revelation 6:9-11).

3 – People who could not know the true God are given a chance for salvation. After death, the Good News can be preached to them:

„They will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead in spirit/the dead in the flesh(3498). For in this one the Good News was preached to the dead in spirit/the dead in the flesh(3498), that they might be judged according to the flesh of men but live according to God in the spirit(4151)” – 1 Peter 4:6.

4 – Since it is possible to preach to the dead, it means that after the death of the body, the book of life is not closed to them. There is no information in the Bible that there are individual books of life.

5 – Man is judged on the basis of books and the book of life. Only at the Judgment of God are these books opened.

6 – From this it follows that at the Judgment, the human figure has a chance to be written in the book of life. Whoever is not written in the book of life goes to the lake of fire.
