Fortune-telling, superstitions, horoscopes, cards, amulets, pendulums, „energy cleansing,” contact with spirits, or astrology – for many people, these are innocent pastimes, a way of life.
Why do people resort to fortune-telling?
Where does the need to look into the future, to consult cards, signs in the sky, or the spirits of the dead, come from?
Are these practices merely innocent traditions, or is there something more behind them?
Does the Bible allow fortune-telling as „spiritual help”?
Or does it treat it as a serious threat?
Why did the prophets react so strongly when Israel resorted to amulets, sorcery, astrology, and the worship of images?
Is it possible to combine faith in God with „small superstitions”?
Does something like „neutral magic” or „safe fortune-telling” even exist?
Let’s see what the biblical scriptures say about this.
1 – The prohibition of fortune-telling and magic:
„There shall not be found among you… a diviner, a soothsayer, an enchanter, a sorcerer, or one who casts spells, or one who consults with spirits… for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord.” – Deuteronomy 18:10-12.
God forbids all forms of fortune-telling and magic. It’s not a game, it’s spiritual betrayal.
2 – Contact with a medium makes a person unclean:
“Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out, or you will be defiled by them.” – Leviticus 19:31.
Any contact with a fortune teller or medium brings spiritual impurity.
3 – Spiritual adultery against God:
„And the soul that turns to mediums and spiritists… I will cut them off from their people.” – Leviticus 20:6.
This is abandoning God in favor of foreign spirits. This is a serious transgression.
4 – Divination is equivalent to abandoning God:
“Because you have forsaken the Lord… and trusted in sorcerers and divination…” – 2 Chronicles 33:6.
The Bible shows that whoever trusts in divination turns away from God.
5 – God will destroy all witchcraft:
“I I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no soothsayers” – Micah 5:12.
In God’s Kingdom, there will be no place for any form of magic.
6 – Superstitions are like praying to wood:
„My people consult their wooden idols, and their divining rods give them answers.” – Hosea 4:12
Superstitions are a misguided, blind trust in inanimate objects – God ridicules this, but also warns against it.
7 – Astrology is powerless:
„Those who predict from the heavens, who gaze at the stars… they will not save you. Behold, they have become like chaff; the fire will burn them up, they will not deliver themselves from the power of the flame.” – Isaiah 47:13-14
Chapter 47 is God’s judgment on babylon—the center of ancient astrology, magic, divination, and „wise men who observed the heavens.” Babylon was proud of its astrologers, who „divided the heavens into parts,” interpreting the phases of the moon and the constellations.
8 – Conversion means abandoning occult practices:
„Many of those who had practiced magic also brought their books and burned them in front of everyone; and they calculated their value and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.” – Acts 19:19
Everything that belongs to occultism must be burned.
9 – Witchcraft and poisoning people close the way to the Kingdom:
„The works of the flesh are evident… sorcery/pharmacy (φαρμακεία)… those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God” – Galatians 5:19-21.
Any form of magic, spells, insidious and poisonous pharmacology – excludes one from the Kingdom.
10 – False spirituality and „angels of light”:
„Let no one condemn you who delights in self-abasement and the worship of angels, dwelling on things they have not seen, and puffed up without reason by their fleshly mind.” – Colossians 2:18
11 – A sorcerer described as the son of the devil:
“Elymas the sorcerer opposed them… Paul said, ‘You son of the devil… will you not stop distorting the ways of the Lord?’” – Acts 13:8–10.
Magic in the Bible is directly linked to the work of the devil.
12 – Sorcerers will go to the lake of fire:
„Sorcerers/those who practice magic, those who practice pharmacy (φαρμακοί)… their place is in the lake of fire” – Revelation 21:8.
This is the ultimate fate of all those who practice occultism.
13 – Sorcerers will not enter the New Jerusalem:
„Outside are… sorcerers/those who practice magic and pharmacy (pharmakoi)” – Revelation 22:15.
In God’s ultimate, perfect world, there is no place for any form of divination or magic.
14 – Enchanting and fortune-telling are forbidden:
„You shall not practice divination or sorcery.” – Leviticus 19:26.
God forbids both fortune-telling and „magical practices.”
15 – Saul dies because he sought out a medium:
„Saul died because of his unfaithfulness/wickedness… and because he consulted a medium.” – 1 Chronicles 10:13.
This shows that engaging in occult practices was one of the causes of Saul’s death.
16 – Seeking advice from the dead is foolish:
„Should not a people inquire of their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?” – Isaiah 8:19.
The Bible ridicules the practice of communicating with the dead. It is spiritual deception.
17 – God overthrows fortune tellers and magicians:
„I frustrate the omens of the false prophets and make fools of those who practice divination.” – Isaiah 44:25.
God Himself ridicules and overthrows all occult powers.
18 – Pharaoh’s magicians were unable to imitate the power of God:
„The egyptian magicians also tried to do this with their spells… but they could not” – Exodus 9:11.
Occultists have limited power; they are powerless against God.
19 – The wicked listen to divination:
„The wicked listen to the lips of sorcerers” – Proverbs 17:4 (LXX meaning: „they listen to false words, to wicked tongues”).
The Bible shows that the inclination towards divination stems from spiritual corruption.
20 – King Ahaziah sought advice from the god of Ekron:
„Is there no God in Israel, that you go to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?” – 2 Kings 1:3.
Turning to other gods is a rejection of the God of Israel.
21 – False prophets „prophesy from their own hearts”:
„They are prophesying to you dreams from their own hearts, not from the mouth of the Lord.” – Jeremiah 23:16
Not every „spiritual vision” comes from God. Most are from human imagination.
22 – All who love occultism will be punished:
“I will stretch out my hand against the sorcerers… and I will root them out from among the people.” – Zechariah 13:2.
23 – False dreams and divinations deceive people:
„For the oracles are deceitful, and the dreams tell falsehoods” – Zechariah 10:2.
The Bible is clear: fortune-telling is a lie.
24 – The Apostle Paul rejects the „spirit of divination”:
„The girl had a spirit of divination… Paul said: I command you in the name of Yeshu…” – Acts 16:16-18.
The girl had an evil spirit that gave her the power of fortune-telling.
25 – People will reject sound doctrine and turn to myths:
“They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” – 2 Timothy 4:4.
„Fairy tales” are spiritual myths — today’s horoscopes, superstitions, and fortune-telling.
26 – Deceptive signs and wonders are meant to mislead:
„The lawless one will appear… with the power of satan, with false signs and wonders” – 2 Thessalonians 2:9.
Not every miracle is from God; a sign can be false – intended to deceive.
27 – False prophets deceive:
„They have seen falsehood and lying divination, saying, 'The Lord has said…'” – Ezekiel 13:6.
Some „prophetic revelations” are simply fortune-telling disguised as the Word of God.
28 – God destroys those who practice sorcery in Egypt:
„The spirit of Egypt will be shaken, and I will frustrate its plans. So they will consult idols and sorcerers, mediums and spiritists.” – Isaiah 19:3
The downfall of a nation leads to a desperate search for magic—but God ridicules it.
29 – Divination practices associated with idolatry:
„They practiced worship in the high places… they practiced divination and sorcery” – 2 Kings 17:17.
The Bible associates divination with idolatry.
30 – The Israelites were forbidden from using amulets:
“You shall say: ‘Thus says the Lord God: Woe to those who sew magic charms on all wrists and make veils of every kind for the heads of people, to ensnare souls! Will you ensnare the souls of My people and keep your own souls alive? You profane Me before My people for a handful of barley and a piece of bread, killing souls that should not die and sparing souls that should not live, by lying to My people who gladly listen to lies.’” – Ezekiel 13:18-19.
Amulets, talismans, „protective bracelets”—all of this falls into the category of magic.
31 – False prophecies and fortune-telling are lies:
„Because they speak falsehood and prophesy lies...” – Ezekiel 13:9.
According to the Bible, a „vain prophecy” is simply fortune-telling disguised in deceptive language.
32 – The spirit of rebellion leads to divination:
„A spirit of prostitution has led them astray, and they have committed adultery, turning away from their God.” – Hosea 4:12
Superstitions are not just a mistake—they are the result of the work of a deceptive spirit.
33 – The astrologers of Babylon fall:
“You are weary of your many counselors. Let them come forward and save you—those who chart the heavens, who study the stars and make predictions month by month about what will happen to you. Behold, they will be like straw; the fire will burn them up. They will not save themselves from the power of the flames. These are not coals for warming, nor a fire to sit by.” – Isaiah 47:13-14.
34 – Fortune-telling leads to ruin:
„The idols speak only nonsense, the fortune-tellers see only lies, and the dreams they interpret are deceptive and offer false comfort. Therefore, they will wander on, like a flock that is constantly straying, because there is no shepherd” – Zechariah 10:2.
Superstitions weaken nations. God shows that this is not only a sin, but also social folly.
35 – Fortune tellers and evil spirits led Judah into sin:
„Evil spirits, sorcerers, and fortune-tellers… led Judah into sin” – 2 Kings 21:6.
36 – Divination among the Philistines – pagans:
“The Philistines practice divination, using divinatory signs” – 1 Samuel 6:2.
Divination was a sign of the pagans – Israel was to reject it.
37 – The folly of divination with objects:
“He took arrows… and divined with them” – Ezekiel 21:21.
Divination using objects (arrows, stones, cards, pendulums) is an ancient occult method.
38 – A false prophet may predict miracles to deceive you:
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and announces to you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder comes to pass, as he foretold to you, and then he says, ‘Let us go after other gods’—whom you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” – Deuteronomy 13:1–3.
All those who teach the faith should be examined. They may be speaking the truth. But their verification will be based on what they believe, not just what they say.
39 – God does not answer people involved in occult practices:
„I will not answer those who follow their idols” – Ezekiel 14:3.
Spiritual idolatry, fortune-telling, and superstitions close the path to God.
40 – Dreams are not our guide:
„He who relies on dreams is like one who grasps at shadows and chases the wind.” – Wisdom of Sirach 34:2.
41 – People who practice magic operate under the power of demons:
“They performed signs, by which they deceived the inhabitants of the earth” – Revelation 13:14.
The Bible makes it clear: fortune-telling, astrology, witchcraft, and superstitions are not innocent curiosities or „alternative paths to spirituality.”
They are dead ends. They promise knowledge but deliver illusion. They promise control over one’s life but lead to enslavement. They promise light but lead into darkness.
We don’t need signs in the sky, cards, horoscopes, or fortune-telling.
We have the Word of God, the teachings of Christ.
And that is the best protection a person can possess and practice.
