This is the third part of a series on the Biblical structure of the world.
Now we will examine the topic: How is heaven built according to the Bible?
Is it the infinite space of the universe as the world presents?
Let’s look at the Bible verses.
Before that, Reader, please read the two parts of this article series: „Is the Earth Circular or Flat? What Does the Bible Say? – Part 1″:

The sky, like a metal mirror
“Can you, together with Him, stretch out the heavens – strong as a molten mirror/like a metal mirror?” – Job 37:18.
This verse:
• describes the sky as a stretched structure,
• which is as strong as a metal casting,
• compares it to a physical object – a mirror made of cast copper/bronze, which in ancient times meant something incredibly hard, smooth and polished.
Since the sky is compared to a mirror, could the blue of the sky mean the waters above the sky?
Let’s look at the next Bible verses.
Above the sky there are waters
„And God said, Let there be a firmament (H7549) between the waters, to divide the waters one from the waters another… And God made the firmament (H7549) and divided the waters that were under the firmament (H7549) from the waters that were above the firmament (H7549). And God called the firmament (H7549) heaven” – Genesis 1:6-8.
“Praise Him, O heaven of heavens, and O waters above the heavens!” – Psalm 148:4.
“And they saw the God of Israel, and under His feet was something like a work of blue sapphire, bright and clear, as the very sky” – Exodus 24:10.
“And above the heads of the living creatures there was something like a firmament, bright as crystal, stretched out over their heads.” – Ezekiel 1:22.
According to the above verses, we can assume that the sky (vault/firmament) is a hard structure, stretched above the earth, above it are layers of waters, which:
• reflects light,
• suppresses and refract the sun’s rays,
• can give the effect of a blue color of the sky when viewed from below,
• is transparent and shiny like a crystal.
From this it follows that the blue of the sky can be an image of the water above the heavens. Different colors result from the incidence of a given light of the sun, moon.
Waters can refract light, disperse colors, filtering rays, cause a visible blue glow (blue of the sky).
Several levels of heaven
“I know a man in Christ… that he was caught up to the third heaven.” – 2 Corinthians 12:2.
„But will God dwell with men on the earth? Behold, the heavens, even the heaven of heavens, cannot contain You—how much less this house which I have built!” – 2 Chronicles 6:18.
“Behold, to the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the heaven of heavens, the earth, and all that is in it.” – Deuteronomy 10:14.
„The heaven of heavens” + „their army” is the level of heaven with the heavenly bodies:
“You, YHWH, are Alone… You made the heavens, the heaven of heavens, and all the army of them…” – Nehemiah 9:6.
Christ ascended above all layers/levels of heaven:
“He who descended is the same who ascended above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.” – Ephesians 4:10.
Here we have an interesting description of the place where the heaven of heavens is located:
“Praise Him, you heaven of heavens and you waters above the heavens!” – Psalm 148:4.
Based on the above verses, we can draw some interesting conclusions:
1 – Heaven and the heavens of heavens are inside the dome, and above it are the waters.
2 – The armies of heaven are also inside the dome.
We can conventionally present the individual layers:
1. Earth.
2. First heaven – atmosphere, clouds, birds (Gen. 1:20).
3. Second heaven – sun, moon, stars (Gen. 1:14–17).
4. Third heaven / heaven of heavens – here are the armies of heaven (Neh. 9:6) and the spiritual zone of God’s glory (2 Cor. 12:2, Ps. 148:4).
5. Waters above the heavens – (Gen. 1:7, Ps. 148:4).
6. God’s presence, which „transcends all” – Eph. 4:10.
We can also assume that there may be many levels of heaven. Paul writes about the third heaven.
Let’s look at the next verses that illustrate the universe created by God.
Heaven has pillars:
“The pillars/columns/supports of the heavens tremble and are terrified at His rebuke.” – Job 26:11.
The sky is shaped like a tent:
“It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, whose inhabitants are like locusts; He stretches out the heavens like a curtain, He spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” – Isaiah 40:22.
Stars:
“He makes the stars: the Bear, Orion, the Pleiades, and the constellations of the southern sky.” – Job 9:9
Air has a weight:
“When He gave weight to the winds, and divided the waters by measure” – Job 28:25.
Cyclic, continuous movement of wind:
“The wind goes to the south, the wind turns to the north; the wind whirls and circles, and returns on its wheel” – Ecclesiastes 1:6.
Introducing the Water Cycle:
“All the rivers run into the sea, and the sea is not filled; to the place from which they flow, thither the rivers return, and flow again.” – Ecclesiastes 1:7.
God raises up steam and drops, condenses them into mist or rain, and then brings down abundant rain for the benefit of mankind:
„He raises up drops of water and turns the mist into rain; they stream down from heaven on high, pouring down on mankind in abundance” – Job 36:27-28.
There is fire underground:
“Out of the earth comes bread, and beneath it is something like fire.” – Job 28:5.
We know how the sky and the earth are built. In the next article we will check what is under the earth. What is: hades, sheol, the abyss…
